DUNESDAY Is Coming. So Is the Best Q4 in Seven Years.
At the close of 2025, we published our projections for the full 2026 domestic box office slate. With three quarters of the year now in the books, those numbers are holding up remarkably well, however you choose to measure them.
Start with the big picture. Through the end of September, our year-to-date Domestic Box Office (DBO) accuracy stands at 94%, with Q3 alone landing at 96%:

The consistency is maintained at the monthly level too, with a June through September run at an average accuracy of 93%, extending the tight margins we posted across the summer. To belabor the point further, it even holds where decisions are made at the level of the individual title. Six major films that were released since the mid-year mark illustrate the point:

That is the value of decision intelligence. A forecast made almost a year out, before a single trailer dropped or tracking number landed, is the kind of information greenlight, finance, and distribution teams can plan around with confidence.
Q4 2026
As we head into the final three months of the year, our predictive platform is calling for something the domestic box office hasn’t seen since before the pandemic. Our previously published projections put Q4 2026 DBO at roughly US$2.4b, which would make it the most lucrative fourth quarter since 2019, and thus the strongest of the post-COVID era.
That represents an increase of roughly 11% overQ4 2025 and a 3% gain on the previous post-pandemic high set in 2024, a clear sign that the theatrical recovery is still building:

Last year, we described the market as settling into a “new norm” for post-COVID performance. This year’s slate suggests that ceiling may be lifting, and the reason is less about any single release than about the depth of the calendar.
DUNESDAY and Beyond
The quarter is anchored, of course, by DUNESDAY: the same-day release of DUNE: PART THREE and AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY going head-to-head the week before Christmas. Not since BARBENHEIMER in 2023 has a release-date collision generated this much anticipation, and with two of the biggest franchises in the business sharing a weekend, the holiday frame is positioned to deliver at a scale that few recent Decembers have matched.
What makes this Q4 different, though, is what surrounds those two tentpoles. The slate blends established IP with original titles building genuine momentum.
Just to name a few, THE HUNGER GAMES: SUNRISE ON THE REAPING returns on the franchise side as one of the most theatrically reliable YA properties of the last 15 years, FOCKER-IN-LAW revives the MEET THE PARENTS comedy franchise for the holidays, and JUMANJI: OPEN WORLD brings back a four-quadrant family favorite.
Alongside them sit titles with real word-of-mouth potential: GODZILLA MINUS ZERO follows its Oscar-winning breakout predecessor, OTHER MOMMY offers horror audiences a fresh entry point, and WERWULF marks Robert Eggers’ quick return to the genre that suits him best.
Forecasting Spotlight – WERWULF
To provide a sample of our detailed projections, we chose to highlight WERWULF, Robert Eggers’ horror follow-up to NOSFERATU and one of the last major releases of the year when it opens on Christmas Day. As with NOSFERATU, which opened on the same holiday in 2024, the film arrives as counterprogramming to the season’s family and franchise fare.

Some of the key inputs we utilized included an estimated budget of US$50m, an additional US$50m in global P&A costs and running the project with Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the lead and Robert Eggers at the helm.
The Cinelytic platform predicts a DBO of roughly US$87.9m, domestic gross revenues (BO, HV, TV) that total US$155.9m, and international gross revenues totaling US$177.8m:

Considering several other factors in the system, the projected ROI for the title (10-year ultimates) is strong at just over 114% after talent backend payouts. That is a compelling return for a director-driven, original-leaning genre title, and a reminder that elevated horror with a distinctive filmmaker attached remains one of the most efficient bets in the theatrical market.
All to Say…
If our projections hold, and ten months of 94% year-to-date accuracy suggests they should, 2026 will close with the strongest fourth quarter the domestic box office has seen in seven years. DUNESDAY will dominate the headlines, but the real story is the depth of the slate behind it: franchise returns, international breakouts, and original genre titles all positioned to contribute. For the executives greenlighting, financing, and distributing the next wave of releases, that is the point. The Cinelytic Group doesn’t make decisions for you, but it does give you the intelligence to make better ones.
